Blue Heron

awarded with the Rainer Werner Fassbinder Award 2025

In 2025, Sophy Romvari was honoured with the Rainer Werner Fassbinder Award for her screenplay for the film ›Blue Heron‹, which is also her feature film debut. The international jury was deeply moved by Romvari's screenplay: "The film exceeds expectations of narrative cinema. Although the screenplay deals in depth with a very personal story and the difficulties of one particular family, it speaks to the experiences of families around the world. The screenplay allows us to become active participants as the author attempts to navigate her way through her memories. The film questions the workings of a system that cannot help people in need and the agonising guilt that overshadows the family history."

Blue Heron

Powerful, emotional, sensitive: the threat hanging over a family’s new beginning, seen from the perspective of its youngest member.

In the 1990s, young Sasha moves with her Hungarian family to Vancouver Island, Canada. During this period of change, we perceive the family dynamics through her eyes as they are increasingly dominated by the unpredictable behavior of her oldest brother, Jeremy. Years later, Sasha seeks a new way to access her memories and embarks on a journey into the past – one that transcends the boundaries of space and time.

Sophy Romvari’s feature debut is a profoundly personal meditation on grief and memory, tenderly photographed in breathtaking light. With great stylistic confidence and assurance, she weaves together two timelines that gradually and almost imperceptibly flow into one another. The film inevitably recalls recent masterpieces such as ›Aftersun‹ and ›All of Us Strangers‹.
