Luciano Berio engaged intensively with Gustav Mahler, particularly in the 1980s. He orchestrated five songs for voice and piano, including settings of texts from “Des Knaben Wunderhorn”. His reworkings use the resources of the modern orchestra and are not mere transcriptions, but sonic reinterpretations. Luciano Berio’s “Sinfonia” is considered a key work of 20th-century music; through its innovative combination of eight voices and orchestra, it creates Pop Art–style collages, and through its multilayered references to musical tradition and contemporary events in the late 1960s, it imagined a future all its own.
