With his bald head, pointed ears, and eerie claw-like fingers, the character of Count Orlok has become an iconic figure of early cinema. At OPAL, the film classic will be shown in a restored version accompanied by the original music from 1922.

As a loose adaptation of Bram Stoker’s ›Dracula‹, ›Nosferatu‹ tells the story of a vampire who, driven by a longing for a human woman, leaves his secluded castle in the mountains and causes great devastation. To perfectly capture the horror on film, meticulous preparation was necessary: Director Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau created artistic sketches for every camera shot and even used a metronome to establish the rhythm he wanted for the actors’ performances. Just how closely visual art, music, theater, and film were intertwined in the early days of cinema is evident not only in the film’s subtitle ›A Symphony of Horror‹, but also in the staging of the 1922 premiere. Audience members were asked to attend in Biedermeier costumes so they could fully immerse themselves in the film’s atmosphere.
