Gaming Meets Cultural History: “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33” (Talk / Live Gaming)

An unknown Paris. Fateful numbers. Captivating music. The Institut Français Mannheim invites you to discover the video game “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33”—a fantastical world between the end of the world and a vision of the future. Selected scenes will be played live by Justine Valiergue (Institut culturel franco-allemand Tübingen/Deutsch-Französisches Kulturinstitut Tübingen e.V.) and commented on by expert Dr. Lena Schönwälder an expert from the Department of Romance Languages and Media Studies at the University of Mannheim, who will also provide cultural-historical context.

The discussion will focus on gaming as a medium for narratives of the future that reflect societal fears and hopes. Developed by a company in Montpellier, the game was released in 2025 and has since won numerous awards. It combines turn-based combat, stunning graphics reminiscent of France’s Belle Époque, and an enchanting soundtrack.
