Panel: Körper im Film

How do films tell stories through bodies? Which bodies do they mainly show? What kind of bodies remain invisible and what kind of stories remain untold as a result? To mark the theme of this year's retrospective, we will be discussing the over- and under-representation of bodies, the depictions of abled and disabled bodies, standardized body images and the significance of ugliness with our guests Moshtari Hilal and Samuel Koch. Personal experiences and cultural-historical perspectives come together and are discussed with the moderator Dr. Sevda Can Arslan, herself a media scholar and curator.


Moshtari Hilal is an artist, curator and author. She studied Islamic Studies with a focus on gender and decolonial studies in Hamburg, Berlin and London. She is co-founder of the collective “Afghan Visual Arts and History” and of the research project “Curating Through Conflict with Care” and is the author of the award-winning book “Hässlichkeit” ("Ugliness", Hanser 2023).

The author, film and theater actor Samuel Koch is known from series such as ›Sturm der Liebe‹, ›Großstadtrevier‹ and ›Vienna Blood‹ as well as the feature film ›Honig im Kopf‹. From 2018 to 2023, he was a member of the ensemble at the Nationaltheater Mannheim and made guest appearances at the Münchner Kammerspiele, where he became a member of the ensemble in 2024. As the author of numerous books for adults and children, he has reached the Spiegel bestseller-list and has been nominated for several awards.
