Live-Voguing-Showcase

What would fashion be without queer subculture? After all, clothes don’t just make the man, they let us play with gender roles and identities. Fashion has always found inspiration on the fringes of mainstream society: in subculture and counterculture, in the underground, in youth culture, and in pop. In the 1970s, the ballroom scene emerged from the African-American and Puerto Rican queer clubs of New York, inspired by haute couture shows and the performances of supermodels. The dance style voguing, named after the famous fashion magazine, first conquered the clubs and then, thanks to MTV and Madonna, the living rooms. Today, this dance style is making a comeback as performance art and queer self-empowerment. Voguing is expressive club culture at its best.
This year, the IFFMH presents the region’s young ballroom scene in a double event featuring a film screening and dance performance. First, at 6:15pm we will show the queer cult film ›Pink Narcissus‹ from this year's RETROSPEKTIVE, and afterwards the “Grace the Floor Ballroom Community Mannheim” will do us the honor of making the cinema shake. A dance tribute to the world of fashion and the queer club!
