Torn between tradition and a newfound yearning for freedom, a young Muslim woman decides who she really wants to be. Powerful female cinema from France!

Fatima, 17, is growing up alongside her sisters in the suburbs of Paris. After graduating from school at the top of her class, she enrols at university to study philosophy. This opens up a whole new world of possibilities. Fatima is torn between her family’s expectations, the traditions of her faith and the yearning that is awakening within her.

Hafsia Herzi has adapted Fatima Daas’ autobiographical novel into a vivid motion picture. Amateur actress Nadia Melliti’s impressive performance earned her the award for best actress at Cannes.

Director

Casted by director Abdellatif Kechiche on the street, Hafsia Herzi became famous overnight and received numerous awards for her performance in the 2007 film ›The Secret of the Grain‹. She subsequently moved to Paris and trained as an actress. Since 2019, she has also been a successful director.
