Steve McQueen was already a celebrated video artist. Then he made ›Hunger‹, one of the most impressive debut films of the past 20 years.
The IRA member Bobby Sands (Michael Fassbender) is interned at the notorious Maze prison in Northern Ireland. There he is subjected to inhumane conditions and mistreatment by the guards. When the authorities refuse to recognize members of the IRA as political prisoners, they go on hunger strike.
›Hunger‹ is an unflinching look at a dark chapter of contemporary history. In addition to McQueen’s unparalleled depiction of the horror, Michael Fassbender’s performance and the staging of his body are truly remarkable. In order to portray the hunger strike realistically, the soon-to-be star lost 20 kg.
