A social portrait without kitsch or false dreariness, Céline Sciamma’s third feature tells the story of a gang of girls in a Parisian banlieu.

Life in the Parisian banlieue is bleak for Marième: her older brother bosses her around at home, school is pure frustration, and the future doesn’t look any more promising. But one day she befriends a gang of girls who take every liberty they can get away with, which deeply impresses Marième. Once initiated into the gang, she is given a new name – Vic – and, most importantly, a different outfit. It seems to be the start of a new life. For this very consciously stylistic film, the director Céline Sciamma designed and selected all the costumes herself.

Céline Sciamma (b. 1978) grew up in Paris and attended the film school La Fémis. Her debut, ›Water Lilies‹, was screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007. Her fourth film as a director, ›Portrait of a Lady on Fire‹ (2019), won countless awards across the world.
