A tragic event turns young Celeste’s life upside down. A coming-of-age story with elements of a political thriller, set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Atacama Desert.

Summer 1990. After seventeen years under the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, Chile is slowly finding its way back to democracy. Amidst this political awakening, 15-year-old Celeste is spending a carefree New Year’s with family and friends in a coastal town on the edge of the Atacama Desert. Suddenly, a personal tragedy devastates her life. Nothing is the same for Celeste afterwards. About a year later, she returns to the scene of the event to witness a solar eclipse. Gradually, she begins to realize that there were deeper motives behind her parents’ archaeological work, causing her old certainties to falter.

In clear and evocative images, Nayra Ilic García captures the stark, majestic vastness of the desert – a landscape of the soul reflecting a young woman’s fears and hopes, as well as the dark political legacy of an entire nation.
