Love is thwarted by fate in one of the great milestones of 1950s Hollywood cinema.

On a luxury cruise in the middle of the ocean, notorious womanizer Nickie Ferrante (Cary Grant) and self-assured singer Terry McKay (Deborah Kerr) fall in love. Both are engaged. When Nickie proposes to Terry, the newly smitten couple agrees to wait six months and then meet at the top of the Empire State Building. Before their long-awaited reunion, however, a tragic incident occurs.

With this remake of his own film ›Love Affair‹ (1939), Leo McCarey authored one of melodrama’s most influential love stories. In 1993, Nora Ephron directed another remake, ›Sleepless in Seattle‹.

Director

Leo McCarey (1898-1969) was a director and producer in Hollywood. He made some of the most important early classics in American film history, such as ›Duck Soup‹ (1933), ›Ruggles of Red Gap‹ (1935), ›Make Way for Tomorrow‹ (1937), and ›The Awful Truth‹ (1937).
