A film about the beauty of dance and the big question of the compatibility between life and art. A spellbinding swirl of color, light and sound.

A career as a dancer, that’s ballerina Vicky’s (Moira Shearer) dream. To her delight, she is accepted into the ensemble of the famous impresario Lermontov (Anton Walbrook). Using ruthless methods, he intends to make her a star. She falls in love with the ensemble’s composer, however, and finds herself in serious conflict with her career.

One of the most brilliant dance films in the history of cinema, in which the obsession with art, and the subordination of life and body that this entails, are taken to new dramatic heights. For Martin Scorsese, ›The Red Shoes‹ has always been one of the greatest films of all time.

Director

Emeric Pressburger (1902-1988) and Michael Powell (1905-1990) made a series of feature films together, all of which are now considered classics. These include ›The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp‹ (1943), ›Black Narcissus‹ (1947), ›The Red Shoes‹ and ›The Tales of Hoffmann‹ (1951).
