John Garfield, superstar of the 1940s, is today regarded as the first Method actor in film history. This rousing boxing drama shows him at the height of his powers.

Charley Davis is a Jewish amateur boxer from the Lower East Side. He dreams of becoming a great champion. Against myriad odds, he achieves a fabulous professional career. But his many victories in the ring attract all sorts of shady characters, while the escalating success goes to Davis’ head. Finally, he risks losing it all. Robert Rossen (director), Abraham Polonsky (screenplay) and a brilliant cast led by John Garfield crafted one of the best boxing dramas in film history. A visually stunning masterpiece that served as inspiration for Martin Scorsese’s ›Raging Bull‹.

Robert Rossen (1908-1966) began his career in the 1930s as the author of various progressive screenplays. He turned to directing in 1947 and authored such works as ›Body and Soul‹, ›All the President’s Men‹ (1949) and ›The Hustler‹ (1961).
